Self Care in Troubled Times

"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.”  -Audre Lorde

There are times where what's happening in the world can feel so overwhelming. It can be easy to get lost in the despair or feelings of helplessness that can arise. During these moments, I am reminded of a powerful voice that challenges what it means to be "taking care of ourselves". Audre Lorde said it best and highlights how engaging in self care in troubled times is not selfish or insensitive but rather can be an act of resistance. Our capacity and ways in which we tune into our needs and wants will look different for each of us. However, I think there can be some commonality among our journeys and ways to engage taking care of ourselves and others.

1. Find safe spaces to notice and acknowledge what you are feeling. Allow yourself to give names to what's arising.

2. Slow down the fear mongering voice(s) and play out your worries. Are they plausible or just possible?

3. Identify what's in your control and what's not. Focus on what is. Identify plans or steps to take to address your plausible fears.

4. Connect with your community or communities. We are social beings by in large and fair better when we gather.

5. Take action. Depending on our means and resources, this might look different but can range from donating money or time to a cause that feels important to you. It could also mean educating yourself on the resources already out there and sharing those with others.
